Blog #2- Writing Exercises: Goals

The goals I have for this semester are to better my writing and through that, myself. I think that when someone writes they learn more about themselves, if they are being truly expressive in their writing. I plan to work on my short stories more, I haven’t visited them in a while and I want to try to develop some of my short stories into full novels. I love fantasy and writing about fantasy but also making it dark and gripping, drawing the reader in and usually leave them hanging. I love the starter stories from bird by bird and The Pocket Muse they are really inspiring for short story ideas. The Fantasy genre really grabs me too, the dark, horror and grit riddled side to fantasy though. Glenn Cook  is my, sort of role model author. His books and his short stories are all so deep and tug at ones heart strings for all of the tragic characters. There is also no Black and White to the characters, no total hero’s and no absolute villains. “good guys” are sometimes not so good and “bad guys” can be good. Morals are present but not all good morals and not all bad morals. That’s generally how people are. I really hope someday that I will be able to make one of my shorter stories into a novel that would be close to Glenn Cooks caliber of writing. I think the biggest goal I have for this class is my novel writing.

Blog #1-Welcome?

Hi, my name is Tyler, I made this blog for my creative writing class. I like writing short stories, building suspense and leaving the reader hanging because that always pissed me off about short stories. I also like writing poems and songs but nothing will ever top my love of short stories. I'm good at writing darker grittier short stories that leave the focus on one character or through their eyes and thoughts. I love this class because i'm able to write freely to an extent. My girl friend inspires me to write alot of my poems and songs and the books I read and day dreams i have inspire most of my short stories. My blog is called Tyler's Hazardous mind because Hazard is my screen name when I play games, and yeah I'm sort of a video game nerd. My favorite author is Glen Cook, I can never escape from his books when I start them, the horror-sci-fi genre he writes is so gritty and feels more real than, as another author compared his work to basic fantasy, "much more gripping than a story of a handsome and charming prince whos pants buldge in the front as his line of perfect infantry walks on by after a clever victory." The characters are always flawed to the point of actually being human and it makes them more complex and deep. The Black Company is my favorite book by Glen Cook, it's worth the read and you won't be able to put it down.
